We are seeking a Archeologist in Salinas, California to join our team. An Archaeologist is responsible for investigating, recovering, and preserving artifacts from historical and prehistoric sites. They conduct fieldwork, including surveys and excavations, analyze findings, and interpret their significance in the context of human history. The role requires expertise in research methodologies, excavation techniques, and artifact preservation. An Archaeologist may work in academic settings, for government agencies, museums, or private organizations, contributing to our understanding of human history through the study of material remains.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fieldwork:
- Conduct archaeological surveys and excavations.
- Collect and record data from field sites, including mapping, photographing, and cataloging artifacts.
- Supervise field assistants and technicians during excavations.
- Use GPS and other surveying tools to locate and document excavation sites.
- Artifact Analysis:
- Analyze findings, including pottery, bones, tools, and other artifacts, to determine their age, origin, and historical significance.
- Clean, preserve, and catalogue artifacts.
- Prepare detailed reports on excavation findings, interpretations, and historical context.
- Research:
- Conduct background research on excavation sites using historical documents, maps, and previous research.
- Stay up-to-date on archaeological theory, methods, and discoveries.
- Conservation:
- Collaborate with conservators to ensure proper handling and preservation of artifacts.
- Recommend conservation methods for long-term preservation of fragile materials.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Document findings using field notes, sketches, and digital technology.
- Write technical reports and articles for academic and professional publications.
- Present findings at conferences and contribute to museum exhibitions.
- Compliance and Legal Considerations:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to archaeological sites.
- Prepare reports for government agencies to ensure cultural resource management laws are followed.
- Public Engagement and Education:
- Engage with the public through lectures, presentations, or tours to educate about historical and archaeological significance.
- Work with museums, schools, and other educational institutions to promote archaeological knowledge.
Key Qualifications:
- Education:
- Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field. Ph.D. preferred for senior roles.
- Experience:
- 3-5 years of fieldwork experience in archaeology.
- Experience in artifact analysis and site reporting.
- Previous experience in supervising excavation teams is an advantage.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in excavation techniques and field survey methods.
- Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other relevant digital tools.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Certifications:
- Professional registration or certification with an archaeological institute (e.g., Register of Professional Archaeologists, RPA) is preferred.
- First Aid and safety certifications for fieldwork are a plus.
Work Environment:
- Fieldwork may require working in remote or rugged environments, often under physically demanding conditions.
- Office-based work involves analyzing findings, writing reports, and conducting research.
- Travel is often required to various excavation sites, conferences, and meetings with stakeholders.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work long hours in outdoor conditions.
- Willingness to travel frequently and possibly relocate temporarily for fieldwork.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
