We are seeking a  Tax Examiner in San Diego, California to join our team.  As a Tax Examiner, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and laws. Your primary responsibility will be to examine tax returns and related documents to verify accuracy and adherence to legal requirements. You will work within a team environment, collaborating with colleagues and sometimes directly with taxpayers or their representatives to resolve issues and ensure correct tax liabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Tax Return Examination: Review individual and business tax returns, examining for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with tax laws.
2. Data Verification: Verify income, deductions, credits, and other details reported on tax returns through meticulous examination and comparison with supporting documents.
3. Research and Analysis: Conduct research on tax issues and discrepancies, utilizing internal and external resources to interpret tax laws and regulations.
4. Communication: Correspond with taxpayers, tax preparers, or legal representatives to request additional information or clarification on tax returns and discrepancies.
5. Issue Resolution: Identify and resolve discrepancies or errors in tax returns through analysis, discussion, and application of tax laws and guidelines.
6. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of examinations, findings, and decisions. Prepare reports and recommendations for further actions or adjustments as necessary.
7. Compliance Monitoring: Monitor compliance with tax laws and regulations, identifying potential fraud or non-compliance issues and referring them for further investigation.
8. Customer Service: Provide assistance and guidance to taxpayers regarding tax-related inquiries, ensuring clarity and understanding of tax obligations.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. A master’s degree or CPA certification may be preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or a related field is advantageous. Familiarity with tax preparation software and financial systems is desirable.
• Skills: Strong analytical skills with attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to interpret and apply complex tax laws and regulations effectively.
